Conscious sedation is a deliberate suppression of the central nervous system achieved with a combination of drugs. These are delivered orally, inhalationally or intravenously. The patient is relaxed, and breathing for themselves. Furthermore, if we needed to speak with the patient we will be able to rouse them and check that everything is OK. Amnesia is almost guaranteed, but there are some rare cases that remember the treatment. Sedation will last for up to 2 hours maximum. Patients should be aged between 16 and 70.
This is not Deep Sedation or General Anaesthesia. There is nothing that is going to compromise the safety of our patients. The level of training and facilities required to safely deliver deep sedation and GA is beyond the skillset and abilities of Dental Support Tasmania at this time. If your patient requires deep sedation, then an anaesthetist or GP anaesthetist will be more suitable.
Our Dental Sedationist, Michael McCarthy, is endorsed by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for conscious sedation. He has completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry for Conscious Sedation and Pain Control. He can treat patients with mild and well controlled medical conditions.
At Dental Support, we want to make working with us as easy as possible. We have a full range of equipment, monitors and consumables that are needed for all cases. Once you have identified the patients that need sedation, you contact us, and we can book a session. All we require of your clinic is for there to be a full tank of Oxygen (Size D), and that the staff at your practice are up to date with emergency training.
The physical layout of your clinic and building is important. At a minimum, emergency services need to be able to access your clinic and move a patient if an emergency ever were to occur. Additionally, the more spacious your surgery is the better. This is not to say that all surgeries need to be enormous, but there will be extra bodies and equipment in the room when sedation is happening.
Once you have lined up your potential patient, Dental Support Adelaide will contact them and perform a phone consultation. This consultation is free of charge to the patient and the referring clinic/dentist. Our aim is to identify any possible issues for this patient prior to the day of sedation. In some cases, the dental sedationist will identify a patient as too complicated and beyond their scope of practice. These consultations will reduce patient and dentist disappointment that may otherwise occur if they were only being assessed moments prior to sedation.
After the phone consultation where a patient is considered suitable for conscious sedation, the patient will be sent an invoice for their consideration. They will make a patient direct to the dental sedationist via bank transfer before the day of the sedation. Once treatment is complete, the patient will be issued a receipt with the relevant item codes. With these documents the patient may claim a rebate back from the health insurance provider. The dental sedationist will not offer preferred provider rates or agreements that are already established by the dentists working in the practice. The fees will remain separate.
Our Dental Sedationist is happy to travel to your dental clinic to meet you and your team. This way you can also meet the sedationist you are entrusting the safety of your patients to. The sedationist will be also to advise you on the optimal setup for your sedation session and whether there are any particular logistical challenges present.
If your clinic is new to offering conscious sedation, then let's start slow. It is not reasonable to expect that you will have a full list of patients to see straight away. That's OK with us. We would like a minimum of two patients for your list when you are starting to offer dental sedation to your patients. As your patient base grows, we will grow with you.
We are happy to have a no-obligations chat with you about how our services can compliment your patient care.
